Discovery of the Pangalanes Canal: day trip

The Pangalanes Canal forms a navigable waterway for more than 654 km on the east coast of Madagascar. In 1896, General Joseph GALLIENI took the initiative to build this artificial channel. With the aim of creating easy access for the transport of local products and materials to Tamatave port. It is a collection of lakes, marshes and ponds that have been connected to form a single long river road. The Pangalanes Canal has become a major tourist attraction on the East Coast. We offer various excursions on the Pangalanes Canal.

Departure at 09:00 in front of the office and transfer by car to the river port.
Journey: 30 km.
Departure from the river port at 9:30 am by motorboat covered with a tarpaulin equipped with life jackets. During the course you will discover the daily life of the peasants: many bush boats loaded with goods and at the same time passengers. Families travel in their little traditional pirogue with their wares, women doing laundry on the canal, fishermen, etc.
After an hour of sailing, stop and visit the village of Ambodisaina typically Betsimisaraka located along the canal. In this village you will observe local activities such as basketry, weaving fishing net, local rum, etc. At the end of the visit of the village, we will embark towards the mouth of the Ivondro where fresh water meets the sea.

For the lunch break you will be in a natural setting at the edge of the canal in the traditional way, on a mat. Our guide will prepare a grilled fish or chicken on site. Or choose lunch at the restaurant and watch the women dancers of the village who do the traditional dance
After lunch, continuation of the visit to the village Ambokarivo and welcome by the villagers.
16h00 Return to the river port.

The zoological park of Ivoloina
It is located from 12 km to the north of Tamatave. It is a 9 km paved road and 4km sandy and stony. This park has 12 species of lemurs, of which 5 species are semi-free, reptiles and amphibians, radish turtles, chameleons, snakes (Boa sanzinia Madagascariensis) and parrot. Among this 12 species including 9 diurnal and 3 nocturnal.
It ensures the breeding and the conservation of the most threatened species of MADAGASCAR. It is managed by an NGO, MADAGASCAR FLORA AND FAUNA GROUP. Many activities are offered at Ivoloina’s Park such as a visit to a small environmental museum, the forest station, hiking trails, the natural swimming pool, model agricultural station, night visit.

Arrived at 9am, visit the park, discover species of fauna and flora that exist in the park such as lemurs, Radiata turtles, BOA. Hike to the natural waterfall.

Visit the museum or environmental education center in the park. This museum shows the biodiversity of Madagascar.
After the visit back to town and lunch in a restaurant at the seaside.

Excursion on Plum Island

Plum Island is a deserted island located 17 km from the port of Toamasina. It has an oval shape 400 meters wide and 2 kilometers long, surrounded by reefs. This beautiful little island covered with dense forest offers the opportunity for a day trip from Toamasina (45 minutes to 1 hour of navigation from the port). The seabed is superb; a mask and a snorkel make it possible to approach near the marvelous ocean fauna. On the island, you can walk in the forest to observe flying fox or bats. Possibility of camping on site.

7.30am departure from club nautique and boarding the boat to join the island.

Arriving on site, visit the island and walk around. Swimming and discovery of beautiful seabed. Masks and snorkels are at your disposal.
At noon picnic lunch prepared by our guides: grilled fish with red tomatoes and dessert the fruits of the season.

At 14h return to Tamatave

Discovery of agro tourism site of the Ivondro which certified organic. It Located  for 20km from Tamatave on the national road 2 which leads to Antananarivo, This site is covered with 3000ha of palm oil fields  which 1200 ha are certified organic.

Departure at 08:30 Pick up to the hotel and take the direction to Ivondro by the national road N ° 2. Arrived at the site after 45mn by car

We will start the tour with a small walk in the field observing the different plantations and discovering the Betsimisaraka craft such as the explanation of the penja’s construction or reeds, via or elephant ear plant, raffia… You can discover the tropical crops and spices: pineapple, cinnamon, coffee, cocoa, carambola and even vanilla. Continue the visit by exploring the different stages of palm oil production in the plant.

Then, after the visit, spending 30mn of secondary road by car to see the Belvédère and admire at once the whole of the palm plantation, the river of Ivondro and the spectacular one. During the lunch, tastings of terroir, heart salad of breadfruit palm, after lunch visit the village and return to town

Toamasina is the first commercial port of Madagascar through which the goods of the country, located in the east coast and 360 km from Antananarivo, by the RN2 (national road RN2). It is the most accessible city.

At 08:00, In the independence Avenue and Rail Station.

The Independence Avenue is lined with palm trees and the restored Town Hall.

Independence Avenue is mainly concentrated in colonial architecture buildings, post office, railway station, bank, etc.

Then you will see the railway station that connects Toamasina and Moramanga. The “Diasoa’s train travels once a week.

At 9:00 Visit Museum

On the other hand, ancestors are very important in the life of Betsimisaraka.

In the museum of Betsimisaraka or regional museum of the University of Toamasina, you will find the traditional tools used by its last ones.

And in particular objects of archaeological shown us  the origin of the Malagasy people.

In addition there is a library to expose the newspapers and books of the old  colonial time.

At 10:00 In the seaside

Along of the seaside we will take a rest to taste the coconut juice.

The seaside is bustling with small kiosks selling refreshing drinks.

On the other hand, there are various religious buildings same as catholic church and mosque.

Then you will pass in front of the big port which is at the origin of the development of Toamasina’s city.

In addition, let us guide you through the Trade Street or “ rue de commerce” where the business center of Toamasina’s city is concentrated: the customs, the chamber of commerce,  the agencies of import and the export companies.

Continue the visit to the Well loved place or “ place Bien-Aimé” where are the banyan trees which are a sacred trees from India, introduced by the pirates. This place is also a place of worship for Malagasy.

12:00 pm: Lunch break 2:30 pm Resumption of the visit

Discover the Creole huts that have specific characteristics: by wooden, builder by piles with a stair, has a veranda, etc. There are many types of Creole huts in Toamasina’s city, however the maintained one is the Alliance Française which is a cultural center.

16:00 Market craft “Bazar Be”

You will end the visit of Bazar Be market colored by spices, fruits and vegetables.

Take the opportunity to buy souvenirs, local crafts: hat, embroidered tablecloths, wood carvings, etc.

After the visit back to the hotel.
